Our favourite Thursday morning dance routine... see if you can practise the moves at home.

We all Belong Day

Last Thursday we decided to celebrate the cultures of Glenavon. We began our day with a rotation around the Moana classrooms. We did Matariki inspired art, learnt how to weave, sung traditional folk songs and played cultural games. We ended our morning with a costume parade. Thank you to all the families who came along for the morning and to everyone who dressed up, you looked awesome!!!

The story of Matariki

We entered the warm heated room under the church of saviour at Blockhouse Bay. The beautiful singing greeted us as we all sat down on the weaved mat. They explained what we would be doing and the first stop was Fiji. They illustrated a picture in our heads about how the cheif wanted persue his dreams to look beyond horizon. While we were still in Fiji they taught us how to count to 7 in fijian, and how the cheif followed the 7 stars all the way to Tonga. When we reached Tonga we translated the words we learned from Fiji into Tongan and we realised that all he islands were alike. We were all connected. The most commen island came along....Aoeteroa. We again translated the words from he other 2 islands. Then it was time for a song about the 7 stars of the Matariki. We had a short period of time doing some art work for the people who are close to us. At the end we larned he true nenaing of the Matariki stars. It was a fun experience.
